Estate bottled

Domaine Rancy is a family Estate established in the twenties. It produced sweet wines, dry reds and roses. In 1970, it was run by Marcel Verdaguer, who made his sweet wines for private customers and sold his reds to the local cooperative.
Jean Hubert Verdaguer joined him in 1974, and then took over with his wife Brigitte in 1989. Their forte were still Rivesaltes and Rancios, old vintages and Hors d'äge. These rare wines still make the reputaion of Rancy.

Soil

The 18 hectares of the Estate are either clay and limestone or brown schists. The vines average 50 years, the oldest on the property being grenache noir and carignan.
The Estate works according to biodynamic principles, with no chemicals. In the last few years one can see on the land ladybirds, glowworms, earthworms as well as plants like garlic and wild leeks that had nearly disappeared.
The procedure to be recognized as organic started in 2008.

Wine making

The vineyards are located on clay, limestone and schists in the villages of Latour de France, Estagel and Montner.

Varietals :
- Maccabeu 95%
- Grenaches 5%

Yield : 20 Hl /ha Average age of the vines: 40 years.

The harvest is made by hand with over ripe fruit, after two checks, at the vineyard and at the cellar.
It goes through direct pressing. Only indigenous yeasts are used. After a slow fermentation of 2 weeks, under temperature control, mutage (addition of alcohol) is performed.
Maturation is on lees, in tank before the wine is put in casks.

The fabulous ageing cellars of the Verdaguer family then make over the years real treasures, Ambrés which show vintages like 1998, 1982, even a rare 1959.
